  Teaching Philosophy

I like to teach the young piano and keyboard students from methods such as Alfred’s Premier Piano Course, Bastien Piano Basics, Faber Piano Adventures, and Piano Town.  They offer correlated course books that teach each new concept in the method book, supplementary book, and theory book for each level.  The students learn how to read the music, to play it on the instrument, and to write it in the theory book.  I feel strongly about teaching theory to students because it enables them to better understand the structure of music and how to write the notes and symbols properly on the staffs.

My preferences for teaching the adult piano and keyboard students are Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course, Bastien Older Beginner Piano Course, Bastien Piano for Adults, and Faber Adult Piano Adventures.

I choose to use the Palmer-Hughes Spinet Organ Course to teach the young and the adult organ students.  The Bastien Older Beginner Organ Course is another successful method to teach the adult students.

The adult piano methods and organ methods offer the opportunity of learning theory and writing in the method books or supplementary workbooks.

If students have had prior instruction in recent years or want to spark the interest to play a keyboard instrument after years of having learned for the first time, I can offer to teach them with method books or personalized lessons using sheet music and books of their preferred type of music such as popular, classical, and sacred.

It is expected that students have access to keyboard instruments so that they can practice their assigned music four to five days a week in order to be prepared to perform for me at their weekly lessons.  The average private lesson is thirty minutes, and advanced students can be scheduled for longer lessons.
